Timing
Incorrect timing of correction is responsible for the increase in the dogs reactivity level. Rewards and corrections have to come within seconds after the behavior . Scientifically proven 1 second after the behavior should come a correction or reward.
Rewards eventually get duration rewards. / Meaning we add time in between the correct behavior and the reward.
Motivation
A good handler needs to understand how to balance positive and negative motivators based on the dog's behavior. Learning when to build up value in motivators to change the dog's behavior is crucial. The value of the motivators has to increase when distraction increases. Positive motivators include treats, toys or something the dog enjoys a lot. Negative motivators include, body pressure, leash pressure, e collar or prong collars. Which motivators you use is based on the dog's personality and behaviors shown.
Consistency
Consistency depends on the environment, circumstances and goals that you want to reach with your dog. Consistency has to be maintained with anything the dog does daily. Every daily action for the dog needs to be repeated exactly the same every time (ie.Making your dog sit quietly before eating or going outside). Staying on a time schedule will help build consistency for both you and your dog when it comes to teaching good behaviors .
Communication
Body Language is the first communication signal to our dogs followed by our verbal commands. Understanding where the handler's body is in space and what you might be telling your dog with your body is very important. The Dog has to understand what you are asking from them. Then picking specific cues and making sure the dog knows what each cue means without a reward or correction. Command list should be as short as possible.
Relationship
Teaching your dog to socially engage, cooperate and interact with you will build a vital bond between canine and handler. This is on the basis of rules, boundaries, and predictability in your lifestyle. Building a relationship is building trust between you and the dog. Ways to build a strong relationship between you and your dog are advocating for what your dog needs, doing something the dog enjoys, training, teaching the dog a new trick, enrichment games, and walking/ hiking with your dog are all ways to strengthen the relationship.
Daily work with all 5 key items with your dog will make you and your dog successful in your training journey together.
